I recently attended an industry conference on PPM in Orlando. At the conference I talked with many large companies who have bought PPM solutions at the “corporate” level and are frustrated. One corporate CIO’s story was something like this:
Five years ago we were sold a “site license” to one of the big PPM vendor’s products. We were promised the grand vision of a single corporate IT dashboard that would bring all of our projects, resources, time, requests, etc all into one place. This would allow us to make the most optimal business decisions about new corporate initiatives, staffing and resource allocation, and duplicate project elimination.

My son Marco wants to build a computer for his senior project in high-school. I tried to imagine him using a project management tool and with the fresh perspective of being outside a "work" environment, I realized how little it would help him. Let's face it: at best PM tools are sterile tracking mechanisms - a pristine sandbox in the back yard in which not even kids are allowed to play. So I asked myself: what would my ideal project management application look like? I concluded it's a very well used sandbox in which it's OK to find the occasional surprise from your cat. Where does and idea end and a project start? The easy answer is that an idea starts at the "water cooler" and becomes a project when we decide to implement the idea. Most of the time ideation is fun and open, and project execution tends to be siloed and fairly boring.
